STORY 1

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

The Double Lunch Order

The cell phone rings early at Mariela's small restaurant. A man orders two lunches to go. He wants chicken, rice, and fried plantain slices. He gives an address in Calidonia and pays over the phone. The restaurant is near that house. Mariela can take the food there on foot.

Mariela writes the order in her notebook. Then she makes a sweet pineapple drink. The drink is cold and sweet. She puts it in two bottles for the orders. At eleven, a woman calls. She also wants two lunches with chicken.

The address is the same. Mariela looks at the two calls on her cell phone. The numbers are different. The first order is from Andrés. The second is from Patricia.

Mariela calls Patricia and asks about the time. The woman speaks quietly. “It's a surprise for my husband. We have a lot of work at home today.” Mariela writes down Patricia's name and prepares two bags. She puts two lunches and a bottle of the fruit drink in each bag.

At noon, Mariela arrives at the house. The door is open. There are boxes everywhere. Andrés carries a table into the room. His wife, Patricia, cleans a window. They are both very hot. The kitchen is still empty. There is no pot on the stove.

“Here are your lunches,” says Mariela. Andrés looks at the bags. Patricia does too. Each of them shows their cell phone. Then they laugh. They both have the same idea for lunchtime.

Just then, two neighbors arrive. They bring the last chairs from the car. They also help with the big boxes. Andrés puts four plates on the table. Patricia looks for glasses for everyone. Now there is food for all four of them.

Mariela hands over the two bags and says goodbye. From the doorway, she hears an invitation. There is some fruit drink for her too. She sits down for a moment. The house is still untidy, but the table is ready.
